Ivan Sigal’s work examines how informational forms, from images and texts to the systems that carry them, shape the ideas they contain. His photographs and multimedia installations include White Road (Steidl, 2012), a photo and text study of the former Soviet Union and Central Asia, published as a book and shown as a solo exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art; KCR, a nine-channel installation on Karachi’s defunct circular railway; Mariupol, the Pivot, about a city at peace at the edge of war; and Into the Fold of the True, a Library of Congress Kluge Fellowship project on the materiality of historical archives. His work is held in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. His writing on media, conflict, and information ecologies has appeared in Foreign Policy, The Guardian, Places Journal, Global Voices, and Creative Time Reports.

His organizational work explores the same questions. He is co-founder and executive chair of the Modal Foundation, which supports open social tech in the public interest. From 2008 to 2024 he was the founding executive director of Global Voices, the international media network that reflects and amplifies the perspectives of Global Majority communities. He has served as board chair of the Open Society Foundations’ Documentary Photography Project, a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center, and a Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Earlier, as a regional director and vice president for Internews Network, he led media initiatives in contexts of conflict, humanitarian disaster, and transitional societies. He has lived and worked in over 90 countries.
