#image_by_image was an ongoing conversation in 2016 and 2017 – in words and images – between photographers Ivan Sigal and Anton Kusters.
This body of work is based on associations of word and image, of fragment and concept, of reuse and reflection, of frank acknowledgement of struggle and doubt before the power of ideas and the claims of photographs. It is rooted in philosophies of antiauthoritarianism and a mistrust of grand narratives.
The work aims to enliven the consideration of photos in social media, and to rebut the assertion that they are necessarily one-dimensional pictograms. It is a way of exploring meaning in dialogue with concepts and our shifting understanding of them across time and history.
